Walter Nishinaka is a taiko player with over 25 years of experience, starting with Chikara Daiko - a community group based in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles - in 1996. After spending time in Japan with an Asakusa-based group, Walter returned to LA to begin working on solo and collaborative performances with artists and groups including Taiko Center of Los Angeles, East LA Taiko, The Grateful Crane Ensemble, Japanese American Steam Punk band Lolita Dark, Japanese calligraphy artist Kuniharu Yoshida, and Kabuki Actor Nakamura Gankyo.
Today, Walter directs the J-Town Taiko Club at Terasaki Budokan in Little Tokyo along with co-founder Maceo Hernandez. He also performs with the Los Angeles Taiko Collective, which he formed along with a small group of local taiko players. Most recently, Walter restarted the San Fernando Valley Taiko Club at the San Fernando Valley Japanese Community Center.
