The Japanese lion dance, or Shishimai, is usually performed during festivities to celebrate the new year, chasing bad spirits away and bringing good luck to families. In recent years, Shishimai has also been performed for ceremonial purposes for communities and businesses. EDO KOTOBUKI JISHI (江戸寿獅子) is the Lion Dance of old Tokyo. Get an introduction to this unique artform from TaikoVentures Sponsored Vocationist Ai Matsuda, who has been studying under Kyosuke Suzuki Sensei of Wakayama Shachu since 2011. In this workshop, you will learn the basic patterns of taiko parts and Shishimai involved in Wakayama Ryu Edo Kotobuki Jishi.
